Independent living, on your terms

BALVIK was created around a simple idea: support should help you keep living your life, not take it over.

We provide flexible, person-focused independent living support shaped around the individual — their routines, priorities and the things that matter to them. Whether that means a little help keeping everyday life organised, getting out and about, looking after a pet or simply having someone reliable alongside them, support starts with the person rather than a checklist.

What makes BALVIK different

Good support should feel personal, practical and respectful. BALVIK is built around the individual — not a fixed list of tasks or a one-size-fits-all approach.

Built around you

Support is shaped around your routines, priorities and the things that matter most to you. You remain at the centre of every decision.

Practical and flexible

Everyday life doesn’t always fit neatly into boxes. Support can adapt around what would genuinely make life easier, more manageable or more enjoyable.

Independence comes first

The aim isn’t to take over. It’s to work alongside you, helping you stay connected, confident and in control of your own life.

MY STORY

Why I started BALVIK

My experience in adult social care showed me just how important independence can be — and how easily it can sometimes be lost.

Working directly with people, I saw many situations where someone was still perfectly capable of doing much of everyday life for themselves, but needed a little extra support to make that possible. Sometimes it was encouragement. Sometimes a prompt, an extra pair of hands, help organising something or simply having someone reliable alongside them.

That small amount of support could make an enormous difference.

As my experience grew, particularly in independence and wellbeing work, I also became increasingly aware of a gap.

Some people did not need — or were not eligible for — a formal package of care, yet managing completely alone was becoming difficult.

Their needs might not be considered significant enough for traditional services, but that did not mean the need wasn’t there.

I kept coming back to the same thought: there should be something in between.

BALVIK grew from that idea.

It is for people who want to remain involved in their own lives. People who may no longer find every everyday task as easy as it once was, but who do not want somebody arriving and automatically doing everything for them. People who still want to cook, shop, walk their dog, get out into the community, organise their own affairs, enjoy their interests or try something they have always wanted to do — perhaps with just a little support alongside them.

WHY IT MATTERS TO ME

I have seen what can happen when someone is given the confidence and practical support to do something they thought they could no longer manage. Sometimes it only takes a small step outside a comfort zone, with the reassurance that somebody is there if needed.

Seeing the pride, confidence and happiness that can come from achieving that is incredibly rewarding. That is what motivates me.

That is why BALVIK is here — to help people enjoy their independence for longer.

About me

I founded BALVIK after working directly with adults across social care and independence and wellbeing services. Those roles gave me experience of supporting people with very different circumstances, abilities, routines and priorities — but one thing appeared again and again: people wanted to be listened to, trusted and treated as individuals.

For me, good support starts with a relationship. It means being reliable, approachable and respectful, understanding what matters to the person and working with them rather than simply deciding what should be done for them.
